Why Very Very Much Student Love Say Chinglish: A Big Big Paper

Abstract

Nowadays, more and more student like speak Chinglish. Teacher say this is wrong English, but student still love say. This paper want answer one question: why very very much student love say Chinglish? I use observe, think, and ask my roommate. I find reasons have many: mother tongue too strong, grammar too tired, Chinglish too funny, internet too powerful, identity too important. Conclusion: Chinglish is not only mistake, it is also bridge and meme. Student love it because it make English easy, happy, and Chinese style. But we also must learn standard English, otherwise exam will give us red cross.

1. Introduction

With China open door more and more big, English become more and more important. From primary school to university, student study English many years. But when they open mouth, sometimes come out: “I very like this”, “You can you up”, “People mountain people sea”. This is Chinglish. Some people say: “Oh no, this is bad English.” But many student say: “Oh yes, this is my English.” Why very very much student love say Chinglish? This paper want give you one two three four five reasons.

2. Reason One: Mother Tongue Is Big Boss in Brain

Chinese grammar already live in head for many years. When student want speak English, Chinese sentence come first. So “I very like” not “I like very much”. But foreigner also can understand. Communication success, why not? Mother tongue is like big boss, English is new worker. New worker must listen big boss. So Chinglish come out naturally.

3. Reason Two: Grammar Too Much Trouble

Tense, singular plural, he she it, a an the. Student brain already have math, physics, and love problem. No space for past perfect future continuous. Chinglish no care tense. “Yesterday I go to school” still make people know yesterday. “He go, she go, I go” everybody go. So student feel relax. Relax student love speak more. This is human nature.

4. Reason Three: Chinglish Very Funny

“Good good study, day day up” make people laugh. “No zuo no die” make people laugh and cry. Laugh can make memory strong. Student love funny thing. Funny thing love student back. When English class too boring, Chinglish is like small candy. Candy not healthy, but happy. Happy student want more candy.

5. Reason Four: Internet Make Chinglish Fly

WeChat, QQ, Douyin, TikTok. One meme come out, ten million student copy. If you not say “you can you up, no can no bb”, you are not cool. Internet is Chinglish’s mother and father. Internet give Chinglish wings. Student use Chinglish in chat, comment, game, and fight with friend. So Chinglish become daily language.

6. Reason Five: Identity and Culture

If student speak too perfect English, maybe people say “oh you show off”. If speak Chinglish, people know: I am Chinese, I have Chinese soul. Chinglish is like Chinese food in English plate. It is not shame, it is flavor. Student want say: “I am Chinese, so I speak Chinese English.” This is cultural confidence, but maybe also lazy confidence.

7. Reason Six: Foreigner Also Use

“Long time no see”, “lose face”, “typhoon” already go into English dictionary. So student think: maybe my Chinglish will also become history. I am not mistake, I am pioneer. Today teacher give me zero, tomorrow dictionary give me page. This dream very beautiful. Student love beautiful dream.

8. But Some People Say No

Some teacher say: Chinglish will make exam fail. This is true. In IELTS, write “I very love Chinglish” maybe examiner cry. But this paper want say: Chinglish is for life, standard English is for exam. In class, use standard. After class, use Chinglish play. Do not write Chinglish in paper? Wait, this paper is Chinglish. Okay, do as I say, not as I do.

9. Conclusion

In a word, student love say Chinglish because it easy, funny, warm, identity, internet, and because Chinese brain plus English word make special chemical. Chinglish is not enemy of English. It is Chinese student’s English with Chinese smell. We should not kill it. We should let it live, let it laugh, let it fly. But also study hard, so one day we can say: “I can speak good English, and I can speak good Chinglish. I am double good.”
